Salem Keizer Public Schools has 2 Charter Middle Schools. Applying to and attending these schools is free. Students are accepted based on a lottery, not location, household income, or academic rank.


Howard Street Charter School (6-8) has an arts, language, and humanities focus. They are now located downtown. Application forms and admissions policy can be found here:

“We encourage you to attend our Parent Information evening on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 and student-led tours of our school on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, but attendance at these events does not influence the lottery. Tours are drop in between 1:15pm and 3:45pm and last about 20 mins.”


Jane Goodall Environmental Middle School (JGEMS, 6-8) has a science and nature focus. They are located in North Salem on the campus of the deaf school. The FAQ page on their website has more info about their mission.
